Apple has just seeded highly coveted iOS 5 GM (Golden Master) build 9A334 on the iPhone Developer portal, the last development build by the company before it releases the final iOS 5 for the mass market. The update, however, looks to contain mainly bug fixes from previous versions of the software apart from several stability and security improvements.
Beta subscribers of Apple’s illustrious iOS Developer Program can download iOS 5 GM for iPad (3G, WiFi), iPad 2 (3G, WiFi), iPhone 4 (GSM, CDMA), iPhone 3GS, and iPod touch 4G, 3G. Make sure to back up your device with iTunes 10.5 beta 6 or through iCloud, and then restore.
In Apple’s terminology, Golden Master is considered as a penultimate step in preparing final version of iOS 5 operating system for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch. By offering the golden master version of the software to developers, it is a sign that Apple is almost ready to offer it to consumers. In simple terms, the golden master version of software is usually the version that actually ships to users.
The company typically seeds several beta versions for bugs to get squashed and give the registered developers ample time to test their app for compatibility and integrate new features and APIs, if any. Being a Golden Master, this is the last chance for Apple to spot any bugs. Till now, Apple has released a new version of the iOS 5 software every few weeks.

- iOS 5 beta 3 on July, 11
- iOS 5 beta 4 on July, 22
- iOS 5 beta 5 on Aug, 06
- iOS 5 beta 6 on Aug, 19
- iOS 5 beta 7 on Aug, 31
Note: For a day or two, there will be a huge load on Apple servers, so expect iOS 5 GM installations to take time, irrespective of a good internet connection.
