Apple stores in Beijing are allegedly selling refurbished iPhone handsets as new ones, claims a consumer rights advocate Wang Hai who immediately filed two lawsuits against Apple after six Beijing consumers raised complaints that their warranties for newly purchased iPhone 4 were for less than a year.

Wu Di and Liu Xiaomeng, two customers to the Joy City store on July 9, found on the Apple websites that their phones’ warranty was due several months early. They called Wang Hai, known for his fights against counterfeit goods and products and who runs a hot line for needing consumers.

A class action lawsuit has been brought against Apple in Beijing, China. They are being sued by Wang Hai who claims Joy City store in Beijing sold reconditioned, used, and secondhand iPhone 4 as brand new product to two customers, Wu Di and Liu Xiaomeng on July 9.

When both the customers registered their iPhone device online, they discovered that the warranty expiration dates for their devices were listed as January and April of next year, three to six months less than the standard one-year warranty. As evidence Wang has uploaded pictures of the consumers’ iPhone receipts and search results on the Apple website.

If indicted of selling secondhand goods, Apple China can be prosecuted by trading standards officers for selling refurbished devices as new. However, the plaintiffs are demanding an apology, compensation twice the amount they paid in addition to legal fees. Via [AppleInsider]
